Last year, I fell in love with Overwatch. What probably draws me to the game are the amount of unique and interesting characters that have made yet-another-shooter come alive. The only other company that has been able to have that effect on me is Nintendo in their Super Smash Brothers titles. This naturally got my mind racing about the similarities between Overwatch and Nintendo characters and the concept of a shooter with them in it!
So today, we’re going to let our nostalgic juices flow as we imagine a game of Overwatch with Nintendo characters!
GENJI X FOX MCCLOUD
Fox in Super Smash Brothers, formally from the Star Fox series, has many similarities to Genji. A dash, a quick projectile, and a reflect all in one! If you were to replace Fox on Genji and change a few cosmetics, it would fit in a team based shooter perfectly! Mission complete!
PHARAH X SAMUS
Who better than the character Pharah was inspired by! Meshing these two together wouldn’t be as easy as Genji-Fox. We’d have to consider Samus’s Screw Attack jump, the morph ball, and her homing missiles! All things considered, these abilities would mesh quite well into the aerial barrage archetype of Pharah! And just think about how cool it would be to have a charge shot!
SOMBRA X SHEIK
The Sheikah clan of Zelda display many similar abilities to Sombra, but mostly they’re just sneaky badasses! Sheik and Impa have abilities like a vanish, and their sheikah tech could have interesting applications in combat. Heck, maybe instead of hacking foes, you could just throw a Deku Nut at them!
HANZO X LINK
Of course it had to be Link! But unlike Hanzo, Link could utilize far more of his arsenal on the battlefield – bombs, bomb arrows, his hookshot or even the Master Sword for a melee attack! It would be like Hanzo, but useful!
JUNKRAT X OLIMAR
Here’s an unlikely duo! I feel these two would mesh well due to the Pikmin toss Olimar and his fellow captains wield! So instead of mindless chucking grenades with Junkrat, you could now thoughtfully plan out with Pikmin to throw, as they have different abilities. Managing which ones to throw when and where to throw them could make for an interesting new hero with a high skill ceiling.
MEI X ICE CLIMBERS
Mei and the Ice Climbers? I don’t even need to make the comparison! Freeze enemies. Launch ice shots. It’s a match made in heaven.
ROADHOG X KING K. ROOL
King K. Rool Reminds me of this nasty hog. And for good reason – they’re both menacing, large and have strong projectile attacks, with King K. having a blunderbuss and canon to shoot at enemies. The Hook could be an issue, but I imagine you could use the blunderbuss to suck in foes as K. Rool did in his final boss fight!
WINSTON X DK
I’m much to miserable a writer NOT to make this comparison. Their similarities are quite shallow compared to our last crossovers. But what works is Winston’s giant leap and his Ultimate Ability. I think with a few additions, DK could work into a team based shooter with the same “dive on the squishies” role.
D.VA X BOWSER JR.
Another match made in heaven is the Korean gamer and the prince of the koopas! Bowser Jr. and his Clown Car’s vast abilities parallel D.va’s in it’s boosters and close range combat abilities. And, when the mech is out of commission, both of these characters jump on out. It may also help that they both like to tease their opponents as they’re fighting them.
REINHARDT X DEDEDE X BOWSER
I may have cheated a tad. Dedede was the perfect fit for the giant hammer-wielding tank, but he didn’t possess a shield. And Bowser could work as a cool sheild tank with his shell , but with no hammer! ARGH! I CAN’T WIN!
In terms of how they would help a team, I think these two characters fit the role of anchor tank. Dedede could charge in with his mallet and spit out stars as a projectile! Alternatively, he and Bowser could both use their giant leaps to clear large areas! Whatever the case may be, it’d be really cool to have these two duking it out with their Melee attacks in a shooter game!
SYMMETRA X ZELDA
Surprisingly, Zelda’s Smash Brothers abilities could be fine-tuned to match this unique support hero. With defensive tools like Farores Wind to teleport her team, Nayru’s Love as a reflective barrier, or Din’s fire as a projectile, these two work hand in hand!! Not to mention, I feel like Princess Zelda would stick to the back lines and have a more elegant bravado than some other Nintendo character.
MERCY X PALUTENA
Angel motifs? No better character to match with Mercy than the Goddess of Light, Palutena. While she can heal, her powers vastly outrank Mercy, with the ability to use an auto-reticle projectile, a reflection barrier, or even having an attack that blinds all enemies on the battlefield!
